FAQ's for New Soccer Parents

My child has never played soccer before. Will they fit in?
Absolutely. Our recreational program is built for beginners. We focus on fun, making friends, and learning the basics of the game. Every child gets equal playing time, regardless of their skill level. Our goal is to make sure your player leaves the field with a smile on their face every Saturday.
What gear do I actually need to buy before the first practice?
We provide the uniform kit (jersey, shorts, and socks). You just need to provide three things:
  • Shin Guards: These are mandatory for safety and must be worn under the socks.
  • Soccer Cleats: Rubber cleats are highly recommended. Make sure they do not have a front toe cleat (like baseball or football cleats), as those are not allowed for safety reasons.
  • A Soccer Ball: Players should bring their own ball to practice.
    • Size 3 for U5 and U7 divisions.
    • Size 4 for U9, U11, and U13 divisions.
    • Size 5 for U16 divisions.
Where are practices and games held, and how do I know the schedule?
All of our recreational practices and Saturday games are held at Penn Forest Township Recreational Park. Your coach will contact you before the season starts with your specific weeknight practice schedule. For game days, we post the full season schedule right here on the website.
What happens if the weather is bad? How will I know if games are canceled?
We play in light rain, but we cancel for heavy downpours, standing water on the fields, or lightning. If we have to cancel or delay games, we will post an alert on our Facebook page and send a message through the Band App. We try to make the call by 7:30 AM on Saturday mornings so you do not make a wasted trip.
What is the $50 Volunteer Bond on my registration, and how do I get it back?
JTYSA is run entirely by parent volunteers. To make sure we have enough help to run the league, we collect a refundable $50 Volunteer Bond at registration.

To get your $50 back, your family just needs to complete one simple volunteer task during the season—like a two-hour shift at the concession stand, helping set up corner flags on Saturday morning, or painting the field lines on Friday night. Once you complete your shift, your $50 is fully refunded to your original payment method at the end of the season.

What is FC Jim Thorpe Travel?

FC Jim Thorpe Travel is a competitive travel soccer program for players who have outgrown recreational soccer and are ready for a more structured, demanding environment. We are focused on development, accountability, and proper soccer culture.

Who is this program for?

Players who are motivated to improve, want more structure and competition than rec soccer offers, and are ready for a serious but accessible travel experience. It is not designed as an elite academy or showcase program.

What does "club-first" mean?

Players are part of FC Jim Thorpe as a whole — not tied to a single named team. Teams are organized by age group and may shift as players develop. A U11 player, for example, may train with the U12 group if it better suits their development. We intentionally avoid team nicknames so players take pride in representing the club, not a temporary label.

What is the seasonal cost?

The seasonal fee is $190, covering league registration, referee fees, club operating costs, and training. Uniforms are separate and are reused each season.
How does FC Jim Thorpe compare to elite academies?
Elite academies serve players already identified for high-level pathways with significant time and financial commitments. FC Jim Thorpe fills a different role — a serious, structured program for motivated players who have outgrown rec soccer but aren't necessarily pursuing that environment yet. Lower cost does not mean lower standards.
How far will we travel for away games?
Most away games are within one hour of Jim Thorpe. Occasional longer trips may occur for playoffs or tournaments, but regular long-distance travel is not expected.
Is playing time guaranteed?
No. Playing time is earned through effort, attitude, training performance, and commitment to team standards. Our priority is long-term player development.
How often do players train?
Players should expect 2–3 training sessions per week plus weekend league matches. This is a significantly higher commitment than recreational soccer.
What age groups does Jim Thorpe Youth Soccer Association cater to?
Jim Thorpe Youth Soccer Association offers programs for children and teenagers aged 6 to 18 years. We group players by age and skill level to ensure the best developmental experience for everyone.
 
How do players join?
Through an open tryout or assessment. All players are evaluated fairly. Tryout details will be posted here and on Facebook when available.
